Since its founding in 1981, New York’s The Mood Disorders Support Group, Inc. has provided in-person peer support to individuals with mood disorders two times a week every week—including Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. That’s more than four thousand meetings over 40 years with almost no interruptions.
Meeting an unprecedented challenge
When Coronavirus came to New York and the lockdown began, the organization hardly missed a beat. With the extraordinary work of numerous volunteers and many hours of trial and error, we migrated our meetings to Zoom, and, within a week, were fully operational on the platform, offering our traditional twice-weekly meetings to attendees and their friends and families. As with our in-person meetings, these gatherings were and are offered free of charge although we are happy to accept the generous contributions that have sustained us over the years.
Ultimately, to accommodate the needs of our participants in an unprecedentedly difficult time, we expanded our service to include a third night of conventional meetings, inaugurated two semi-monthly meetings for individuals in the BIPOC and Queer communities, hosted an artistic performance to raise funds, added a Topic meeting to our weekly calendar, trained a new class of facilitators, and offered several enrichment workshops on topics such as suicide prevention and racism in the world of mental health. Amazingly, we did all this on a shoestring, grateful for contributions but consistently providing our service without charge.
Now, as we move with caution into the post-Covid era, we are doubling down on the power of peer support and hoping to keep our organization thriving in its mission to inspire and support individuals with mood disorders just as it has for four decades.
In addition to offering our expanded schedule of weekly meetings, which continue to be available at no charge—donations always appreciated—we are introducing a new slate of programs and benefits to individuals and families who purchase an MDSG-NY membership—
